The door locks in your home see a lot of use on a daily basis. With all that use, it’s no wonder they sometimes need a little bit of TLC to keep them working properly. By taking some time to regularly maintain your door locks, you can extend their lifespan and keep them working like new for years to come. Here are three easy ways to do just that.

1. Keep Them Clean

The first step in maintaining your door locks is to keep them clean. Over time, dirt and grime can build up on both the inside and outside of your locks, making it difficult for the key to turn smoothly. To clean your locks, simply insert a small brush into the keyhole and scrub away any debris. You can also use a cotton swab or Q-tip to clean the inside of the lock itself. For an extra-deep clean, you can remove the lock from the door and soak it in soapy water for a few minutes before scrubbing it down with a brush.

2. Lubricate as needed

If your locks are starting to feel stiff or sticky when you turn the key, they may be in need of lubrication. The type of lubricant you use is important—you’ll want to avoid using anything too thick or sticky, as this can actually make the problem worse by attracting more dirt and debris. A light silicone spray or WD-40 will do the trick. Simply spray a small amount into the keyhole and insert and remove the key a few times to work the lubricant into the moving parts of the lock.

3. Check for wear and tear

Finally, inspect your locks regularly for signs of wear and tear. Look for any cracks or chips in the metal, as these can cause rusting or further damage down the road. If you see any damage, take note of where it is so you can have it repaired as soon as possible by a professional locksmith. With regular maintenance, your door locks will stay in good condition for years to come!

Door locks are an essential part of keeping your home secure—so it’s important to take good care of them!
